Neurological conditions may arise because of an inherited, or genetic, condition such as Huntington's disease. They may also develop after an injury or accident; after cancer; as a result of a brain tumor; or resulting from an illness or stroke. With aging, some people develop dementia, Alzheimer's or Parkinson's disease. Other conditions may worsen in adulthood such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, or Lou Gehrig's Disease).
Some neurological conditions are less serious, but can cause pain and disability. You may experience chronic headaches and back or neck pain.
Peripheral nerve disorders affect signals between the brain and the rest of the body. These conditions include diabetic nerve problems; Guillain-Barré syndrome; carpal tunnel; and regional pain syndrome. The symptoms may start gradually but worsen and include numbness, pain, burning or tingling and muscle weakness.
Movement disorders include tremors (dyskinesia); Parkinson's disease; autoimmune diseases; and infections. Movement disorders may be inherited.
Treatments include medication, rehabilitation therapy and surgery to treat underlying causes and reduce pain.
