Blood Diseases (Hematology)

Blood disorders may stem from a genetic condition, or they may develop during childhood or adulthood. In children these diseases are treated by our pediatric specialists. (Visit our Children’s Health-Specialty Care pages)

Our specialists (hematologists) treat all blood diseases in adults, including anemia, bleeding and clotting disorders, hypercoagulable states and platelet disorders. Sickle cell anemia primarily affects African Americans and causes pain, infections and organ damage. Hemophilia occurs when the blood cannot clot leading to uncontrolled bleeding. Anemia results from a drop in the number of red blood cells and can cause shortness of breath, fatigue, paleness and weakness.
