Diabetes Care

People with diabetes often have very good results by following the right program of care. Our diabetes services offer advanced treatments and a caring staff whose goal is to get you on the road to better health.

Losing weight, eating less and exercising more can ease diabetes symptoms for some people and for some people, may be the only treatment needed. If you need more intensive treatments, you’ll find them. Our treatments are based on your needs and have full certification of the American Diabetes Association.

As a first step, patients are evaluated by our endocrinologists, or hormone and gland specialists. We then provide medications, nutrition and exercise counseling to help you resume to your favorite activities. Our diabetes course will help you with foot care, stress reduction, travel and restaurant dining.

Each year we offer Winning with Diabetes, a day of programming provided at a low cost. This day brings together experts from the medical school, and nursing and nutrition faculty, along with staff from the Pitt County Health Department and ViQuest Center. Winning with Diabetes offers eye and foot screenings, blood pressure checks, kidney screenings and cholesterol screenings. We also hold a "question and answer" session.

A doctor’s referral is required to be seen by our diabetes specialists. Dr. Robert Tanenberg, serves as director of the ECU Diabetes and Obesity Center.
