Physical Therapy

Types of physical therapy

Your therapist may use these treatments, known as modalities.

Ice – can reduce swelling, inflammation and pain.

Heat – can increase blood flow and decrease inflammation.

Ultrasound heat -- penetrates deeply to aid healing in the tendons, ligaments and muscles.

Exercises – movements that strengthen muscles and increase flexibility in joints. Your therapist will demonstrate exercises you can do at home.

Massage – gentle pressure and movement allows joints and muscles to loosen and regain function.

Stretching – allows muscles, ligaments and tendons to lengthen and move.

Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) - uses a small unit to deliver a non-invasive nerve stimulation that has been found to reduce acute or chronic pain in many patients.

Whirlpool – water eases muscle and joint pain and may increase flexibility.
