The EM-IM residency started in July 2004 at ECU Emergency Medicine. We received approval in August from the American Board of Emergency Medicine and the American Board of Internal Medicine to begin accepting incoming residents for a five-year combined EM-IM residency. We will have two slots available per year, so that by 2009 there will be a total of ten combined residents.
ECU is the eleventh combined EM-IM program in the United States. The format of the five-year program will be rotating three-month blocks in each department, with a reversal in the rotation between second and third year. The residents will also staff a continuity clinic of their own patients during their rotations on Medicine. They will be required to do a senior scholarly project for BOTH departments, and to be involved with a combined EM-IM Grand Rounds.
This new program is a great addition to our already outstanding residency.
