Initial Training
Emergency Medical Technician -- Basic (EMT-B)
This class emphasizes the basic skills needed to operate an ambulance, assess scenes, assess patients (vital signs and patient survey), render basic patient care (CPR, splinting, hemorrhage control, O2 administration and, etc.), patient transport; reporting (radio and written), blind insertion airway device, auto-injector, and meter-dosed inhaler. Skills such as those listed above give the student the bases for all future classes. Prerequisites: Possession of a high school diploma;or successful completion of an exam assessing basic reading comprehension skills at a minimum at the 10th grade level. Instruction: 169 classroom hours minimum.
Emergency Medical Technician -- Intermediate (EMT-I)
This class emphasizes advanced patient assessment and care. Skills such as intubations, intravenous access, and drug interventions are only parts of the care taught. Pre/co-requisites (state): Successful completion of all EMT educational requirements is required prior to participation in clinical education and field internship components of educational program. High school diploma or GED may be required as either a prerequisite or co-requisite of the educational program. Successful completion of an entrance exam assessing basic reading comprehension and English skills at a minimum of the post-secondary grade level Math skills at a minimum of the high school grade level. Although not required, it is recommended for students to have at least one year of pre-hospital EMS experience. Note: Subject to change in accordance to NCOEMS. Instruction: 160 classroom hours minimum, 48 hospital clinical hours minimum, 48 field clinical hours minimum.
Emergency Medical Technician – Paramedic (EMT-P)
This class refines skills in advanced patient assessment and care. Skills such as decompression, cardio-version, crycothryotym, interossious access, pain management and nasal intubations, etc. Pre/co-requisites (state): Successful completion of all EMT educational requirements is required prior to participation in clinical education and field internship components of educational program. High school diploma or GED may be required as either a prerequisite or co-requisite of the educational program. Successful completion of an entrance exam assessing basic reading comprehension and English skills at a minimum of the post-secondary grade level. Math skills at a minimum of the high school grade level. Anatomy and Physiology may be required as either a prerequisite or co-requisite of the educational program. The A&P component may be offered separately from the paramedic program or may be incorporated into the lesson objectives for the appropriate didactic sessions. Although not required, it is recommended for students to have at least one year of pre-hospital EMS experience. Note: Subject to change in accordance to NCOEMS. Instruction: 596 hours minimum, 200 hours hospital clinical hours minimum, 300 field internship hours minimum.
Medical Responder
This program is designed to take the lay public to a level where life-threatening can be controlled until advanced care can be assessed. Skills such as taking vital signs, hemorrhage control; and splinting are just a few of the important issues addressed by this program. Prerequisites: Possession of a high school diploma; or successful completion of an exam assessing basic reading comprehension skills at a minimum at the 10th grade level. Instruction: 69 classroom hours minimum.
Automated External Defibrillation (AED)
This program is designed to teach the lay public on how to effectively use the Automated External Defibrillator. This class includes information on the chain of survival for the adult. Instruction: 3 classroom hours minimum for adult only; 6 classroom hours minimum for adult/child/infant.
Automated External Defibrillation for the Corporate Environment (ACE)
This program is designed for the business environment. It includes the AED program but also incorporates continuing education and medical direction in order to establish and maintain an effective team of individuals skilled in the use of CPR, airway management and AED. Instruction: 4 classroom hours minimum.
Continuing Education
Basic Life Support
These classes are designed to teach new material for patient care at the basic life support level as well as refresh skills and knowledge the various EMT levels.
Advanced Life Support
These classes are designed to teach new material for patient care as well as refresh skills and knowledge at the various advanced life support levels. These classes meet the state requirements for continuing education for the EMT-B, EMT-I, and the EMT-P levels.
Special Classes
ACLS Advanced Cardiac Life Support includes refreshing the BCLS skill as well as incorporating airway management, drug and defibrillation skills to manage the patient with cardiac problems. Prerequisites: Must be currently certified in BCLS.
BCLS Basic Cardiac Life Support includes training in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Foreign Body Airway Obstruction management for infant, child, and adult. This class also includes discussion on healthy heart living, signs and symptoms of stroke and heart attacks.
