About Friends of Leo Jenkins Cancer Center

The Friends of the Leo W. Jenkins Cancer Center (Friends) is a community of people who want to support the patients, their families, staff, physicians and educators of our Cancer Center. Efforts to bring the Friends into being were begun by a patient finishing treatment in the fall of 2007. Not until Dr. Ernest Larkin became Interim Director that the red tape was cut late in 2009, bylaws signed, recruiting began for a board of directors and the Friends came to life. A support group for our cancer center was long overdue.

The Mission Statement for the Friends is: To support the goals and objectives of the Leo W. Jenkins Cancer Center (LJCC). The Friends operate under the auspices of ECU/Department of Oncology, reporting to Dr. Peter Kragel. Currently more than 100 members strong, we invite all whose lives have been touched by Cancer to join us. There is no cost required for annual membership. Contributions are welcomed; the Friends have not had a fund raiser and monetary support for our endeavors comes from members who donate at the time of joining or renewal or for their own special reasons.

We work closely with the Medical and Health Sciences Foundation of ECU and the Pitt County Memorial Hospital Foundation. Gifts to the Friends may be directed to any purpose within LJCC, for general use and are considered a gift to an organization qualified as 501 (c) 3 by the Department of Treasury/Internal Revenue Service. Gifts may be of cash or the many tax advantaged methods approved by the IRS. Often favorable taxable consequences result.

Activities of the Friends have included: a Reception for all Staff, Physicians and educators of the center, creation of the Garden of Tranquility outside the first floor of the center, funding the Bell of Hope located in the first floor lobby, seasonal decoration of the Garden, special seasonal treats for all patients. Friends have funded gas cards and other support for patients, participated in Survivor’s Day, provide volunteer services for the center via the PCMH. And the list goes on, with a patient orientation.

The Friends provide patients, their friends and family with a community of understanding. Patients often seek a means to give back. It helps with healing.
