Graduate Medical Education nationally has implemented an initiative to transition resident and fellow education from a process-based endeavor to an outcomes-based endeavor.  Many refer to this process as “competency-based training.”  To learn more about this initiative and its impact on accreditation, please see the following links:

Items that must be approved by GMEC/DIO prior to submission to ACGME

Per ACGME Institutional Requirement IV.B.10, the GME Committee must review and approve, prior to submission to the ACGME:
  • changes in resident complement
  • additions and deletions of participating institutions used in a program
  • appointments of new program directors
  • progress reports requested by any review committee
  • responses of all proposed adverse actions
  • requests for increases or any change in resident duty hours
  • all applications for ACGME accreditation of new programs and subspecialties
  • requests for “inactive status” or to reactivate a program
  • voluntarily withdrawals of ACGME-accredited programs
  • request for appeal of adverse actions
  • written appeal presentations to the ACGME

Do not contact the ACGME for approval of the above without prior approval of the Designated Institutional Official (Lorrie Basnight, MD).
