The purpose of the organization is to promote professionalism and education of members. It is the mission of the SHIMA to provide opportunities for leadership development, diversity, and avenues for professional development along with fellowship among HIM students.
The SHIMA is traditionally actively involved in fund raisers and community service. In the past, students have attended national, state and local conferences where they had opportunities to attend educational sessions and network with Health Information Management professionals and students. The members have been involved in a wide range of service from cooking meals for families at the Ronald McDonald House to working with Special Olympics.
