Each resident is on call from home an average of one week out of every six weeks. Faculty are available at all times for backup.
During the course of the three-year program, residents assume progressively responsible leadership duties, including assisting faculty in the instruction of external residents, as well as instructing medical students.
A typical weekly schedule for a resident includes the following:
- 1 half-day procedure clinic in which the resident, with direct faculty supervision, may perform simple excisions, laser surgery, and cosmetic procedures;
- 6-7 half-days "attending clinics" in which the resident works directly with the dermatology attending;
- 2-3 half-days of academic time (e.g. research, special projects, etc.).
All residents will do a month-long rotation in dermatologic surgery their first year, and two months in their second and third years. All residents serve on the In-Patient Consultation Service for two months each year, on a rotating basis. Residents have reduced clinic responsibilities during consultation months. New hospital consultations average approximately 50 per month.
