Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is one cause of a fatty liver, occurring when fat is deposited (steatosis) in the liver but is not due to excessive alcohol use. It is related to insulin resistance and the metabolic syndrome.  These conditions can often be treated with medications and diet interventions to lose weight. Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is a more severe form of NAFLD and may also respond to therapy.
