Research Day 2006

Learn the Basics of Developing a Successful Presentation

Tips to get started:

  • Give the audience accurate, authoritative information that is well-organized and properly cited.

  • Use simple, neutral backgrounds; these are best for readability.

  • Limit the lines of text on a slide.  Edit for wordiness.  Use direct language.

  • Include clip art sparingly.  Graphics should contribute information to the presentation.

  • Allow time for questions after the presentation.

  • Run the spell checker.

  • Check the room and equipment before the presentation.

  • Practice the talk until the delivery is smooth.

  • Provide meaningful narration—don't read the entire talk from the slides.  Slides are only visual cues.
