Policy on Patient Admissions and Patient Care Limits

for Inpatient Services

Department of Internal Medicine Residency

 

 

MICU Service:

  • A first-year resident must not be assigned more than 5 new patients per admitting day;
  • A first-year resident must not be assigned more than 8 new patients in a 48-hour period.
  • A first-year resident must not be responsible for the ongoing care of more than 12 patients.
  • When supervising more than one first-year resident, the supervising resident must not be responsible for the supervision or admission of more than 10 new patients per admitting day.
  • A supervising resident must not be responsible for more than 16 new patients in a 48-hour period.
  • When supervising one first-year resident, the supervising resident must not be responsible for the ongoing care of more than 16 patients.
  • When supervising more than 1 first-year resident, the supervising resident must not be responsible for the ongoing care of more than 24 patients.
  • The Supervising resident is requested to inform the Chief Resident or Program Director when ongoing patient care limits are being approached (within one or two patients). This will permit appropriate distribution of patients to other residents, fellows, or services if necessary.
  • The Supervising resident will provide the Chief Resident with his/her team’s census as of 7AM Monday-Friday.

Inpatient Internal Medicine Services:

Cardiology, General Internal Medicine, Nephrology, Hematology-Oncology, Neurology

  • A first-year resident must not be assigned more than 5 new patients per admitting day;
  • A first-year resident must not be assigned more than 7 new patients in a 48-hour period.
  • A first-year resident must not be responsible for the ongoing care of more than 10 patients.
  • When supervising more than one first-year resident, the supervising resident must not be responsible for the supervision or admission of more than 9 new patients per admitting day.
  • A supervising resident must not be responsible for more than 14 new patients in a 48-hour period.
  • When supervising one first-year resident, the supervising resident must not be responsible for the ongoing care of more than 16 patients.
  • When supervising more than 1 first-year resident, the supervising resident must not be responsible for the ongoing care of more than 20 patients.
  • The Supervising resident is requested to inform the Chief Resident or Program Director when ongoing patient care limits are being approached (within one or two patients). This will permit appropriate distribution of patients to other residents, fellows, or services if necessary.
  • The Supervising resident will provide the Chief Resident with his/her team’s census as of 7AM Monday-Friday.
