Submissions which are found to be incomplete or where the information may be lacking, incorrect, or inconsistent, the submission will not be forwarded for review until such issues have been resolved. This applies to all submissions requiring full, expedited or exempt UMCIRB review.
 
WarrenThe primary function of the University and Medical Center Institutional Review Board (UMCIRB) is to protect the rights and welfare of human subjects engaged in research at East Carolina University, The Brody School of Medicine, Pitt County Memorial Hospital and its affiliates, and in research conducted elsewhere by faculty, students, staff or other representatives of the University in connection with their responsibilities. This mission is accomplished by an institutional commitment to education and establishment of a collaborative relationship with the researchers and key support staff.

What's New at the UMCIRB?
New Law for Clinical Trials
A new law enacted on September 27, 2007 will require NIH applicants and grantees to register their applicable clinical trials at ClinicalTrials.gov. For further information about this law, including which trials should be registered and who is responsible for the registration, FAQs from the US Department of Health and Human Services.

Exempt and Expedited Proposals

When completing the research forms for an exempt or expedited category of research and resources in Pitt County Memorial Hospital or the Brody School of Medicine are to be used, the investigator is responsible for obtaining the appropriate signatures from PCMH and/or BSOM. The signatures must be attained on the designated portion of the research form for exempt proposals and on the Institutional Approval for research Form for expedited research submissions. These approvals should be attained prior to the exempt and expedited submissions being submitted to the UMCIRB office. Contact names and phone numbers of the representatives from each resource area are located on the forms.

ECU Policy on Social Security Numbers (SSN) & Personal Identifying Information (PII)
On September 12, 2007, The ECU Board of Trustees approved a new policy for the collection, use, security and disclosure of SSNs and PII by East Carolina University (ECU). The policy specifies when this type of information can be used, by whom and what approval process may be necessary. Review this policy.
