The Lives They Left Behind: Suitcases from a State Hospital Attic: July 18-September 9, 2008
The Lives They Left Behind: Suitcases from a State Hospital Attic is an exhibit based on the contents of hundreds of abandoned suitcases that were found in the attic of Willard Psychiatric Center in Willard, New York when it closed in 1995 after 126 years of operation. Contents of the suitcases allowed exhibit curators to interpret and present stories from the lives of people who were removed from their communities and institutionalized. The exhibit offers historical insight and inspires compassion for those with mental illness today. The Lives They Left Behind: Suitcases from a State Hospital Attic was developed by The Community Consortium and is circulated by the Exhibition Alliance, Inc., Hamilton, N.Y.”
