Brody School of Medicine Dean Search

The Position

The successful candidate will have a passion to develop, in collaboration with other key stakeholders, a high value clinically integrated delivery system to serve rural eastern North Carolina. The Dean, along with health system leaders, will be in a unique position to address the social determinants of health and health disparities in a large geographical, sparsely populated, economically challenged rural area.

Committee Updates

February 1, 2017

Thank you for your continued patience as we proceed with the Dean search. We continue to attract excellent candidates who have the necessary balance of leadership experience in teaching, research, clinical affairs and public service required for Brody's long-term success.

During the next 45 days we will be bringing two or three candidates to visit the campus and meet with faculty and staff. The agendas for those visits are forthcoming, and you are invited to participate accordingly. As you interact with these candidates, I ask everyone involved to be enthusiastic, articulate advocates for the great things happening here. We need to emphasize the importance of Brody to health care delivery in eastern NC and beyond, as well as its impact on the future physician workforce.

Our job during these visits is to recruit the next Dean, and that job requires positive and passionate people making a lasting impression on the candidates while they're here experiencing what Brody, the Health Sciences Division, ECU and eastern NC are all about. We want them to leave our campus with a sincere desire to assume the role of Dean and a genuine excitement about the possibility of working with all of us to achieve the next level of BSOM greatness.

Thank you for your patience as we continue the BSOM Dean Search. I am very aware that the current status of the search is not what any of us had hoped. I have been advised by our search consultant that at least an additional 4-5 weeks are needed to identify, research and pre-interview additional candidates for our review. Therefore, additional search committee meetings are unlikely for about 5-6 weeks and perhaps longer. The search committee's charge for this phase of the search is 1) continue to screen candidates presented by the search consultant; 2) conduct telephone, Skype or on-campus interviews as deemed appropriate; and, 3) recommend 1-2 additional acceptable candidate to the Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences. Some minor modifications to the search committee composition have been made. The revised committee roster is listed below. I want to thank the committee who have already devoted a considerable amount of time and energy to this important search.

Thank you again for being a part of this important process. I look forward to appointing and working with a great new Dean for the Brody School.

July 26, 2016

The Brody School of Medicine Dean Search Committee held its first meeting on March 16 and has had seven subsequent meetings. We received and reviewed a strong and diverse pool of 42 applications. Fifteen applicants were selected for consideration, and in-depth face to face interviews were conducted by the CarterBaldwin search firm with these applicants. After careful review by the committee following these interviews, nine applicants were selected for videoconference interviews by the committee on July 21 and 22.

The committee has selected five candidates from this pool for campus interviews. Arrangements are being made now to bring these candidates to campus in early to mid-August. We have adhered closely to our timeline and hope to have a final recommendation to the Vice Chancellor, Dr. Phyllis Horns, by the end of August. You will be notified of all campus interviews and we welcome your participation and feedback on each candidate.
