Mission / Educational Objectives

Mission
The BSOM has a threefold mission/objective provided by the North Carolina General Assembly. These are:

  1. to increase the supply of primary care physicians in North Carolina,
  2. to provide outstanding medical care to the people in Eastern North Carolina, and
  3. to provide educational opportunities to minority and disadvantaged students.

Medical School Objectives Project (MSOP)
The faculty adopted the MEDICAL SCHOOL OBJECTIVES PROJECT (MSOP)** as representative attributes desired of students of the Brody School of Medicine.

  1. Graduates must be PROFESSIONAL. They will understand and be mindful of the traditions of medicine; be altruistic, compassionate, empathetic, and honest. They will make decisions keeping in mind people's differing beliefs and values.
  2. Graduates must be KNOWLEDGEABLE. They will understand the scientific basis of medicine and be able to apply that understanding to the social, ethical, financial, biological, and psychological aspects of medical care.
  3. Graduates must be SKILLFUL. They will be highly skilled in providing patient care including the collection of information and its interpretation and management; and in communicating with patients and colleagues orally and in writing.
  4. Graduates must be GOOD CITIZENS. They will accept personal responsibility for collaborating with other health professionals and for using systematic approaches to promote, maintain, and improve the health of individuals and populations. This requires the application of knowledge in service to their communities and society.
