This is a two week equivalent selective spread over one month. It must be taken with another two week equivalent selective (including research options).
Goals
To examine conceptual and moral issues relating to death and dying and to the care of dying patients.
Objectives
| I. | To reflect on the concept of death, with particular attention to technical criteria for determining death |
| II. | To consider physicians' and patients' attitudes toward death and dying and their implications for terminal care |
| III. | To evaluate studies of stages and styles of dying |
| IV. | To analyze specific moral issues in terminal care, including the use of living wills, DNR orders, and hospice care |
Student Experience
Students will pursue the course objective through reading and discussion of medical, philosophical and literary readings on death and dying.
