"Moral Challenges in Rural Health Care” was the most recent in a series of conferences sponsored by the Bioethics Center, in conjunction with the Department of Medical Humanities and the Eastern Area Health Education Center. The conference, held on December 6 in Greenville, NC, examined many of the distinctive moral problems encountered by health professionals working in rural areas like eastern North Carolina. Conference speakers included Dr. Jane McCaleb, Medical Director of the Rural Health Group in Jackson, NC, Mr. James Bernstein, Director of the North Carolina Office of Rural Health, and Dr. Jacqueline Glover, Acting Executive Director of the West Virginia Network of Ethics Committees. The conference also featured a panel discussion of regional professionals, case-based small group discussions, and a Readers Theater performance and discussion of a short story by Katherine Ann Porter.
