Services

The Office of Medical Education & Student Development (OME&SD), is located within the School of Medicine and is dedicated to your academic and personal development.  Our primary mission is to maximize the academic success, personal and professional development of all medical and graduate students (including resident physicians).  To achieve this mission the staff of OME&SD provides a variety of support services including academic counseling and career planning activities, with a major focus on group and individual counseling for trainees on a variety of topics related to personal and academic development.

Academic Development
Academic Development services include individual and/or small group assessment and interventions related to:

  • Academic and performance anxiety
  • Time management
  • Study and test taking skills
  • Stress management
  • Psychoeducational workshops
  • Licensure preparation
  • Learning and cognitive development
Personal Development
Personal development services include individual, couple, or small group assessments and interventions related to:
  • Lifestyle management
  • Communication skills
  • Multicultural awareness
  • Career counseling
Recruitment
The OME&SD staff assists the school with recruiting students who are interested in pursuing medical education with an emphasis on the recruitment of minority and disadvantaged students by:
  • Attending graduate and professional school fairs in North Carolina to assist students in their preparation for and application to medical school
  • Providing psychoeducational programs to pre-health student organizations to help strengthen their academic performance
Books / Materials Loan Service
OME&SD maintains a textbook and supplemental reference library as well as a vast assortment of MCAT preparation and review materials. These items can be checked out for a three-week loan period free of charge.
