Summer Program for Future Doctors

Summer Program For Future Doctors

Purpose & Description

The Summer Program for Future Doctors is an intensive, challenging, educational summer program that allows participants to experience the pedagogical style and demands of the medical school curriculum.  The program, which accepts approximately 20-25 participants, has two components.  The non-matriculating program is aimed at premedical or undergraduate students.  The matriculating program is geared toward medical students who have already been accepted to the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University for the following fall semester.

The Summer Program for Future Doctors is a great opportunity for participants to strengthen their basic science knowledge base, enhance their critical thinking skills, gain a better understanding of the application and admissions process, and exhibit their abilities to successfully handle the academic, social, and emotional demands of medical school.

Participants receive grades for each course unless otherwise specified. An official ECU transcript is not issued. Upon written request of the participant, summative evaluations based on objective and subjective factors can be submitted to any medical school or other institution.

The Summer Program for Future Doctors (SPFD) includes:
  • A demanding academic medical curriculum with over 200 hours of Human Gross Anatomy, Biochemistry, Neuroscience and Physiology.
  • Opportunities through the Office of Clinical Skills and the Simulation Center to develop clinical skills and clinical reasoning.
  • Sessions focused upon enhancement of learning and study skills and strategies for increasing reading power. Academic counselors are available to help students become more effective and efficient learners.
  • Orientation to the community and social aspects of the health care environment with topics such as verbal and nonverbal communication, interviewing skills, medical ethics, moral reasoning, medicine and the law, and diversity.
  • Physician shadowing opportunities allowing students to witness medicine in action, observe procedures, and develop relationships with staff at clinical sites within the community and Brody School of Medicine clinics.
  • Sessions designed to enhance preparation for the admissions process including discussions of AMCAS and the application process, writing the personal statement and preparing for the admission interview. Mock interviews with feedback are provided.

Non-matriculating Program

The non-matriculating program is geared towards students with a commitment to a career in medicine along with strong academic potential. The non-matric program aims to develop average students into more competitive applicants for medical school.  The goal of the non-matric component of SPFD is to:
  • To provide educational enrichment experiences for premedical students
  • To promote excellence in the areas of academic performance, learning skills, personal and professional development
  • To facilitate the medical school admissions process
  • To provide a strong academic science program

Matriculating Program

The matriculating program is for students who have committed to the Brody School of Medicine and would like to get early exposure to the medical curriculum and adjustment to the medical school environment. Participants typically have a desire to gain additional academic preparation, and a desire to address areas of concern prior to full matriculation.
