One of the most important missions of the Department of Medicine is the training of our Interns and Residents. The Department is firmly committed to providing quality education in all areas of Internal Medicine, including the combined program in Medicine and Pediatrics. Graduates of the program are well-prepared for careers in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics - or for subspecialty training in either discipline.

In my opinion, the combined program is the "Crown Jewel" of our residency programs - a focus of excellence in graduate medical education. We will continue to foster that excellence.

Thank you for your interest in our combined Medicine-Pediatrics training program. Our residency emphasizes a combination of primary-continuity care and exposure to complex patients whose medical conditions require management in a tertiary care setting. This approach provides the resident with the knowledge and experience to diagnose and manage the broad spectrum of diseases and problems.

The Pediatric component of our program offers a highly qualified and dedicated faculty and modern, well-equipped clinical facilities at the Children's Hospital of the University Health Systems of Eastern Carolina and the Brody School of Medicine Pediatric Outpatient Center. Both of these facilities are located on the same campus. The Children's Hospital is the only tertiary care facility in eastern North Carolina designed especially for pediatric patients.
