A unique first gift was made to Laupus Library on Aug. 29 with the presentation of a Spanish language translation of a textbook co-authored by East Carolina University School of Nursing faculty member Dr. Martha Raille Alligood. Ann Marriner Tomey of Fort Myers, Fla., is also co-author of "Nursing Theorists and Their Work."
It was the fist time that anyone could recall that a health sciences faculty member presented a foreign language translation of their textbook to the library, said Director Dr. Dorothy Spencer.
"This is a valued and treasured gift for the library," Spencer said.
During the presentation, senior nursing student Maria Lourdes Coll Perez read a passage in Spanish from the first chapter of the book.
"We appreciate the scholarly work that Dr. Alligood has been involved with," said Dr. Sylvia Brown, acting dean of the School of Nursing.
Alligood is professor and director of the doctoral program in the School of Nursing. She earned her nursing diploma from the Good Samaritan School of Nursing in Zanesville, Ohio, a bachelor's degree in nursing from the University of Virginia, a master's degree in nursing from Ohio State University and her doctorate in nursing from New York University.
