The Lamp of Learning Ceremony is a College of Nursing event that celebrates the transition of first-year nursing students into the clinical aspect of the undergraduate program. The fall Lamp of Learning Ceremony was held on September 17, 2009, in the Health Sciences Building on ECU's west campus.
The ceremony is designed to instill an immediate sense of leadership and professionalism in students as they begin clinical rotations. From the first day in the nursing program, students are held accountable for their actions.
To commemorate the ceremony, each student receives a small pin in the shape of a lamp. The pin is worn on a student's uniform throughout the undergraduate program to symbolize their commitment to nursing.
The program includes words of wisdom from the Dean of the College of Nursing, the Associate Dean of the Undergraduate Program, the Director of Development and the President of Sigma Theta Tau Beta Nu chapter. All presentations encourage students to take responsibility for themselves, their patients and their communities.
