Donna W. Roberson, PhD, FNP-BC, associate professor, is the Executive Director of Program Evaluation and on the faculty of the Department of Advanced Nursing Practice and Education at the East Carolina University College of Nursing (ECU CON). A true “Pirate Nurse,” she graduate from the ECU CON with a BSN, MSN and post-MSN certificate before journeying to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill earning a PhD in nursing. Beginning as an instructor in the undergraduate program in 1995, Dr. Roberson earned promotion and tenure in 2012.

Dr. Roberson is an alumna of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Nurse-Faculty Scholars Program (2009-2013) and received almost $300,000 to study an intervention to prevent HIV among women incarcerated in a detention center (jail) setting. This program offered exceptional development in nursing education, leadership and research. Her results from the nurse-faculty scholar’s program grant have been presented in local, national and international venues as well as published in national and international journals.

Committed to service and professional activities, Dr. Roberson is the immediate past-president of the Beta Nu chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing. Beta Nu chapter is the recipient of 12 chapter key awards – one of only two chapters in the world with this distinction. Dr. Roberson is also a member of the editorial board for the Journal of the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care (JANAC) and a member of the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care (ANAC).

Dr. Roberson is an elected Faculty Senator representing the CON on the ECU Faculty Senate, a member of numerous University and CON committees, task forces and has served on several search committees. Dr. Roberson also serves as a speaker for Eastern Area Health Education Consortium on a variety of family, medical-surgical, geriatric and adult health topics.

Beginning in fall 2018, Dr. Roberson became the principal investigator/project director for the ECU Geriatric Workforce Enhancement Program grant for an extended 4th year of funding in excess of $880,000. This grant has aims to improve the care of aging adults through education of healthcare providers and the lay public.
