The Division of General Obstetrics and Gynecology includes a section of Urogynecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery, which offers surgical as well as non-surgical treatment of genital prolapse and urinary incontinence. This section is staffed by Samuel M. Atkinson, Jr., MD and C. Sage Claydon, MD.
Dr. Atkinson has been a Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology in the Department for over eighteen years. He served as Director of the Residency Training Program from 1990 – 2000. Dr. Atkinson has thirty-five years of surgical experience with concentration in surgery for urinary incontinence and reconstructive vaginal surgery. He is a certified trainer in the use of the Tension Free Vaginal Tape (TVT) and the Monarc Suburethral Obturator Tape for urinary incontinence. He has trained over 200 physicians in their use. Both of these minimally invasive techniques have revolutionized the treatment of urinary incontinence in women.
Dr. Atkinson has attended an international technology conference where he performed the Monarc procedure as it was televised live to an audience of Russian gynecologists.
Evaluation and management of female urinary incontinence is an integral part of the pelvic reconstructive clinic in the department of obstetrics and gynecology. State of the art urodynamic testing is available including complex cytometrics, uroflow studies, urethral pressure profilometry, EMG, and voiding analysis. Medical and surgical treatment is based on both the clinical and urodynamic evaluation. Surgical techniques for stress urinary incontinence include both transvaginal and transabdominal approaches. The latest transvaginal tape suspension procedures are utilized.
C. Sage Claydon, MD joined ECU Women’s Physicians and the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology in 2004. Studying advanced treatment and surgical techniques, Dr. Claydon completed fellowship training in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, Cooper Hospital, Camden, New Jersey. She completed her residency at UCLA Medical Center, Los Angeles, California. Dr. Claydon earned her medical degree at Medical College of Virginia/VCU, Richmond, Virginia and her undergraduate degree at UCLA.
