PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology in the University Health Systems offers a structured four-year program designed to accept residents directly from medical school. The educational program prepares resident physicians for either private practice or an academic career. The Department Program Director is Clifford Hayslip, MD and Assistant Program Director is Keith Nelson, MD

Eighteen full-time faculty members as well as fifteen community Obstetrician Gynecologists participate actively in student and resident teaching. This combination of academically oriented clinicians and contributing private physicians provides a broad spectrum of patient populations and management techniques. The four year training program includes rotations in pathology, family medicine, emergency medicine, obstetric ultrasound, maternal fetal medicine, gynecologic oncology, and reproductive endocrinology and infertility as well as benign gynecology. Scheduled teaching conferences complement an organized program for directed self-learning.

Residencies in all of the major specialties exist. In addition to Ob/Gyn, they include Surgery, Medicine, Pediatrics, Psychiatry, Pathology, Rehabilitation Medicine, Emergency Medicine and Family Practice. Fellowships in Pathology, Endocrinology, Neonatology, Cardiology, Cytology, Pulmonary and Child Psychiatry.

We are continuing to expand our facilities and our programs such as high-risk obstetrics, transplant surgery and cardiac surgery. Our growth naturally signals the need for additional health care facilities to support these services. Recently completed is a $5 million addition which includes a new pediatric ICU and an all new labor and delivery suite.
