ECU Professors Present at NCOTA Conference:  Navigating the Future for Occupational Therapy

ECU's Occupational Therapy Faculty was well represented in the program! There were several paper presentations and posters representing student/faculty research work.

Dr. Leonard Trujillo had two paper presentations: The use of the interactive metronome as a viable OT treatment modality and Taking a step towards using technology to evaluate children in the classroom.  He also shared a poster with Alison Grieshop titled Impact of the metronome on upper extremity movement with post-CVA individuals as well as Blair Rhodes titled  The Validation of the Electronic Motor-Free Visual Perception Test 3rd Edition

Dr. Jane Painter and ECU alumni Sharon Elliot presented on:  Physical contextual and environmental considerations for persons with Alzheimer's disease. Dr. Painter also shared a poster with Joni Long and Cherie Newton called: The Effectiveness of a Tai Chi Program for Fall Prevention.

and Carol Lust presented a workshop on Handwriting without Tears effectiveness for pre-school readiness and cursive skills. They invited two of their graduate students to present with them, Amy Harris and Emily Garner.

Dr. Anne Dickerson presented on The IADL of driving for occupational therapy generalists and specialists,  a paper recently accepted by AJOT for publication.  She also shared two posters!   One with Jennifer Gaudy on Jennifer's thesis:  Clients and caregivers' perception of the meaningfulness of IADL tasks.  The other poster was the result of three students work on the brake reaction timer, Angela Brake, Laurel Mann, and Letica Hernandez's New brake reaction timer:  Test/Retest.

Tim Reseitter shared a poster with his two graduate students Scott Cormier and Cara Wiseman which was Reaching Kinematics following mental practice:  Examination of age differences.

 

ROADI at the Driver Rehabilitation Specialist Conference

Dr. Anne Dickerson and Elin Schold Davis

Dr. Anne Dickerson attended the 33rd Annual Conference of the ADED, the Association of Driver Rehabilitation Specialists.  In addition to collecting data for a recent study on the use of driving assessment, Anne presented a 3 hour workshop to the participants about The Essential Relationship of the DRS within the Scope of Occupational Therapy Practice.  This presentation was based on a driving study done here at ECU as well as a clinic in Vermont. The results have generated a model for how generalists and specialists need to work together to meet the needs of our clients when considering driving.  Elin Schold Davis, AOTA's Older Driver Program Manager, also participated in the presentation.

Dr. Anne Dickerson, Dr. Michelle Porter, Jim Langford, and Lisa Molnar present a symposia at the World Congress

Dr. Anne Dickerson chaired an international group of researchers for a 90 minute Symposia at the World Congress of Gerontology and Geriatrics.  Planned last year, the program Managing Senior Mobility Across the Western Continents included four presentations from Australia (Jim Langford:  Using safe system principles to enhance older driver safety and mobility), Canada (Michelle Porter:  Technology for assessing older drivers and assisting them to drive safely), Michigan (Lisa Molnar:  Using instrumental vehicle technology to monitor the driving performance of older adults, and ECU (Anne Dickerson:  Implementation of safety programs for older drivers).  The conference was attended by 6,000 professionals gathered in Paris, France for the five-day event that is planned only once every four years.

 

American Occupational Therapy Conference: April 22-26, 2009  

The Occupational Therapy Department was well represented at the Annual Occupational Therapy Conference and Expo in Houston, Texas.  Five faculty members had presentations and posters, several with student representation.

Dr. Carol Lust presented a poster Improved handwriting readiness in Head Start children using the pre-K Handwriting Without Tears program.  Contributing authors were graduates Kim Brown, Brian Hummel, and Megan Terrio.

In addition to receiving two honors, Dr. Jane Painter, Cherie Newton, and Joni Long exhibited the poster  Effectiveness of Tai Chi Exercise and Fall Prevention Education among Seniors in Reducing Fall Risk Factors:  Linking Research to Practice and Education.

Dr. Tim Reistetter had three poster presentations!  Motion Analysis of Upper Extremity Movement Smoothness was exhibited with graduates Julie Burke, Corinne Burns, and Kelly Grayburn.  He also was lead author on poster Unilateral and Bilateral Upper Extremity Weight Bearing Effect on Hand Function and Functional Performance after Brain Injury with colleagues Beatriz Abreu, Jane Bearlehman, and Kenneth Ottenbacher.  Dr. Reistetter also had a poster with Dr. Dickerson.

Dr. Anne Dickerson had two posters presented, both involving student driven projects.  The first was with Dr. Reistetter and Daryl Bourgeois titled Comparing Two Simple Brake Reaction Timers:  Results of a Study. The other poster was also with students Courtney Cosentino, Kimberly Hocking, and Iesha Hernandez as well as Dr. Jane Painter.  That study was on the Older Adult Participants' Perceptions of the Usefulness of CarFit.   

A new edition to the conference was the Technology Day.  Dr. Leonard Trujillo was able to demonstrate his contribution long distance. He presented on Developing Educational Kiosks to Support the Installation and Use of AT Devices.

Dr. Anne Dickerson arrived early to the conference and assisted with full day Pre-Conference Institute for the CarFit Technician Training on Wednesday and the CarFitEvent Coordinator Training three hour workshop on Thursday. As one of the few Carfit Instructors, she worked with Elin Schold Davis, Coordinator of the AOTA Older Driver Initiative, to train seven new CarFit instructors for around the country.
