The educational objectives of the program are based on the Accreditation Standards for Physician Assistant Education (2006) as established by the Accreditation Review Commission for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA). The standards concentrate on the patient management skills of evaluation, monitoring, diagnosis, therapeutics, counseling and referral.
The curriculum for the PA program is divided into 2 phases, the Didactic phase and Clinical phase. The Didactic phase lasts for 15 months and consists of 60 semester hours conducted on ECU's College of Allied Health Science campus. The clinical phase makes up 40 semester hours over a 12 month period.
The didactic curriculum is oriented toward primary care infused with content related to unique problems and issues of healthcare delivery in remote settings.
The twelve month clinical phase consists of more than 1900 patient contact hours. Ten clinical rotations are conducted at a variety of clinical sites located in eastern North Carolina.
