Image analysis involves utilizing digital images to provide data and information. This is done with computer technology to recognize patterns, create maps, and process signals within images that cannot be done with the human eye due to the large amount of information generated and collected.
The image analysis facility within the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine uses MATLAB® software to provide image processing, analysis, and algorithm development to assist with basic and clinical research. Digital imaging and the data acquisition tools include basic digital photomicroscopes, flat bed scanners, the Aperio® whole slide imaging system, and the iCys® research imaging cytometer.
The image analysis facility performs two-dimensional image analysis including morphometry, densitometry, contour analysis, etc. Numeric results as well as photographic quality prints may be provided. Consultation and application programming in MATLAB® is offered.
