Residency Program

Goals and Philosophy

Residency Program1

The overall philosophy of the residency program at East Carolina University/Vidant Medical Center is to equip the resident with clinical knowledge, technical skills, and managerial and administrative expertise through education, experience and research so that at the completion of the residency the trainee will be prepared to handle medical and administrative aspects of a pathology laboratory.

With the guidance and supervision of the faculty and the full-time staff, residents will gradually assume greater responsibility for the daily functions of the pathology service. Emphasis is placed on competent and expeditious management of clinical situations and interaction with clinical colleagues. The pathologist's role as a consultant to clinical services is stressed. Skills and attitudes are developed so that the trainee will appreciate that education in the practice of pathology is a lifelong endeavor necessary to maintain clinical competence.

Residency Program2

The goal of the training program is to provide the resident with a learning environment to master all required competencies and adequately prepare the resident to become certified by the American Board of Pathology, and to subsequently achieve success in a career in pathology.

It is the intent of the program to meet the training needs of residents interested in practicing pathology in academic departments, community hospitals, independent laboratories or in scientific industry.
