Awards/ Recognition

The Pediatric Healthy Weight Research and Treatment Center and its faculty engage in high quality patient care, research and outreach which has often been recognized by local, state and national organizations and peers. See the listings below for awards and recognition since 2006.

 
 

2010

MATCH Selected for $100,000 Blue Cross Blue Shield Award

In celebration of its 10th anniversary in November 2010, the Blue Cross Blue Shield of NC Foundation (BCBSNC) announced it was investing $1 million in 10 nonprofit organizations across the state. Each organization, former BCBSNC Foundation grantees, received an additional $100,000 to continue efforts to positively impact the health of their local residents. MATCH (Motivating Adolescents with Technology to Choose Health) a school-based wellness program conducted through the PHWRTC, received one of the 10 awards from the Foundation to continue its work of improving obesity rates of middle school students.

  • Sarah Henes, PhD, RD, LDN: Earned PhD in Bioenergetics, East Carolina University, July 2010

  • Keeley Pratt, PhD, LMFT: Earned PhD in Medical Family Therapy, East Carolina University, May 2010

  • Kathy Kolasa, PhD, RD, LDN: American Dietetic Association Medallion Award, 2010

  • Kathy Kolasa, PhD, RD, LDN: NC Prevention Partners, Jim Long Achievement Award for Individual  Prevention Excellence, 2010

  • Matthew Mahar, EdD: East Carolina University, College of Health and Human Performance, Outstanding Service Award, 2010.
 

2009

Achievements for PHWRTC faculty include:

  • David Collier, MD, PhD, Selected as one of "The Triangles Best Doctors" by peers in Healthy Living Magazine, spring 2009.

  • David Collier, MD, PhD, Selected as "One of the Best Doctors in America" 2007-2008, 2008-2009.

  • David Collier, MD, PhD, Invited speaker, Centennial Founders Convocation, East Carolina University, March 26, 2009.

  • Amy Gross McMillan, PhD, PT and David Collier, MD, PhD, along with co-authors Auman NL and Williams, BDS, received the 2009 Tony Long Award for the best-written article, "Frontal plane lower extremity biomechanics during walking in boys who are overweight versus healthy weight" published in Pediatric Physical Therapy.

  • Kathy Kolasa, PhD, RD, LDN, Received the ECU "College of Human Ecology Centennial Legacy of Leadership" award, February 2009.

  • Suzanne Lazorick, MD, MPH, Awarded a $300,000 Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Physician Faculty Scholar Award to study the effectiveness and feasibility of a middle-school based intervention for childhood obesity (MATCH), March 2009. Funding will be awarded July 2009-2012.

  • Matthew Mahar, EdD, Selected as a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine, 2009.
 

2008

  • Suzanne Lazorick, MD, MPH, Selected through a competitive process to attend the AAMC Early Career Women's Professional Development Conference, July 2008.

  • The Comprehensive Healthy Weight Clinic of the PHWRTC was recognized in March 2008 by the National Initiative of Children's Healthcare Quality as one of three model programs nationally providing childhood obesity treatment.

  • The Comprehensive Healthy Weight Clinic of the PHWRTC was listed in October 2008 by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) as an "innovative childhood obesity attempt" with the expectation that it will achieve "innovative" status once complete results are analyzed.   • Recipient of the 2007 "Excellence in Biopyschosocial Care Award" presented by the ECU Family Therapy Clinic and Marriage and Family Therapy Program.
  • Listed as one of nine key resources for the state in North Carolina's Plan to Prevent Overweight, Obesity and Chronic Diseases, 2007-2012.

The PHWRTC was also featured on a national broadcast of "The Profile Series" on December 20, 2007. The segment raised awareness of childhood obesity and ways the ECU Pediatric Healthy Weight Research and Treatment Center is addressing the epidemic. Click on a link below to view the segment.
