Medical Nutrition Therapy Protocol

In 2004, local Pitt County dietitians, under the leadership of Ms. Emilie Balkman, MPH, RD, LDN and Dr. Kathryn Kolasa, PhD, RD, LDN developed a medical nutrition therapy (MNT) protocol specifically for overweight children. The protocol provides guidance on topics to discuss with overweight children for a series of nutrition visits as well as patient education materials for each session.

The MNT protocol is updated yearly. Provided below is the 2009-2010 version. As an evidence-based document, the protocol incorporates the latest recommendations from organizations such as the American Dietetics Association and the American Academy of Pediatrics. The protocol is being implemented county-wide so that overweight children receive a consistent standard of care for nutrition counseling services.
