5th Annual Pediatric Healthy Weight Summit
When Environment and Biology Collide: What Everyone Needs to Know about the Impact on Obesity from Pregnancy through Adolescence and Beyond
March 6 & 7, 2008
Greenville Hilton ~ Greenville, NC
Purpose
The purpose of the summit was to understand the role various environmental factors play in the development of obesity.
-
The first day of the conference offered new insights into how elements of the built environment and the community/school environment, exposures to common environmental compounds, and manipulation of the in-utero environment may predispose us to develop obesity and obesity-related complications across the lifespan.
-
The second day featured workshops on ways to assess and mitigate the effects of these potentially obesogenic environmental influences.
Specific objectives were to:
-
Describe cutting-edge research on a range of environmental influences for the development of obesity and lifelong predisposition to chronic disease;
-
Evaluate the evidence for these environmental factors as contributors to the causes of obesity;
-
Generate ideas for new and innovative research projects that address how environmental factors can be mitigated or promoted; and
-
Explore practical applications for incorporating the evidence into every day clinical practice.
