2009 Summit

6th Annual Pediatric Healthy Weight Summit:
Developing Healthy Communities through Policy and Environmental Change

Summit Objectives

  1. To learn about and review national and local policies that either hinder or promote the development of healthy lifestyle habits related to obesity; and
  2. To provide participants with tools to become advocates for policy and environmental changes within their own communities and clinical settings.

Continuing Education Units and Category 1 Continuing Medical Education credits were offered.

The summit reached 119 participants including 24 medical residents who attended the afternoon portion of the program. The participants represented a wide range of disciplines, such as medicine, public health, allied health and nutrition and came from 19 counties across North Carolina.


Morning Plenary Speakers

Plenary 1: "Environmental and Policy Approaches for Promoting Healthy Weight" Ross Brownson, PhD, Co-Director, Prevention Research Center; Professor, School of Medicine and George Warren Brown School of Social Work, Washington University in St. Louis

Plenary 2: "Farm to Fork: Building Sustainable Local Food Economies to Promote Healthy Weight" Alice Ammerman, DrPH, RD, Director, Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention; Professor, Department of Nutrition, Gillings School of Global Public Health, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

Plenary 3: "The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation: Reversing the Childhood Obesity Epidemic by 2015" Jasmine Hall Ratliff, MHA, Program Office, The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

Plenary 4: "CDC's Strategies for Obesity Prevention and Control" Beth Tohill, PhD, MSPH, Division of Nutrition and Physical Activity, The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

The afternoon program consisted of three tracks which included workshops and panel discussions.
