Research Interest
Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) affect the lives of more Americans than any other diseases, thus having a significant social health and economic impact. Atherosclerosis is indicated by the vascular deposition of fat and cholesterol, inflammation of the arteries and the localized abnormal growth of vascular smooth muscle along with the hardening of the arteries. The condition is normally treated by mechanical intervention, which often leads to complications involving abnormal re-growth of vascular cells at the site, a condition commonly referred to as restenosis.

The primary focus of my work in Dr. Tulis’s laboratory is to understand the molecular and cellular mechanisms that lead to vascular smooth muscle cell re-growth and movement. A wide range of pathophysiological events related to vascular remodeling are thought to be regulated via cyclic nucleotide signaling. More specifically we are interested in identifying the cyclic GMP and the cyclic AMP dependent processes and their relation to each other. Several experimental approaches including whole animal models as well cell culture are employed. We hope that elucidating these mechanisms will help in minimizing the severity of the vascular disorders and could possibly suggest favorable avenues for further basic science and clinical studies.
