The Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry of the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University invites applications for a two-year fellowship in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. This program can be entered after two or three years of general psychiatric residency.

The program is designed so that graduates are prepared for careers in clinical, community and academic child and adolescent psychiatry.

The faculty includes six full time child and adolescent psychiatrists, as well as a pediatric neurologist, a developmental pediatrician and numerous mental health and allied health professionals.

The first year of the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship covers six months of inpatient work and six months of outpatient work. During these rotations emphasis will be placed on learning how to do comprehensive psychiatric evaluations, develop treatment plans and implement treatment (psychopharmacological treatment and various therapies). During the outpatient rotation, the resident also works with a pediatric neurologist and works closely with pediatricians on the pediatric consultation service.

In the second year of training there are two six month blocks for rotations. These rotations are community psychiatry experiences. Community programs include an adolescent substance abuse program, a residential treatment facility for school age children, developmental evaluation center, University speech and language program and a state residential school for the deaf. There is also time for electives and agency consultation (schools, social services, juvenile justice).

Weekly seminars focus on development, psychopathology, comprehensive assessments and diagnostic formulations, and different treatment modalities. A special topics seminar covers a variety of important issues for medical practice (ethics, managed care, utilization review, consultation, transition to practice). A journal club and closely supervised outpatient work span both years.
