CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

Notice: The Clinical Psychology Predoctoral Internship Program with the Department of Psychiatric Medicine at the Brody School of Medicine is not actively recruiting for interns or accepting applications until further notice.

The Predoctoral Clinical Psychology internship program is housed in the Department of Psychiatric Medicine at the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University. This upcoming year (2011-12) will be our third year for the internship. We are an APPIC member program (Program code: 212411), but we are not APA accredited.

Brody School of Medicine is located on the Health Campus of East Carolina University, a large and modern institution of higher learning located in Greenville, NC. The Brody School of Medicine has as its primary clinical teaching site Pitt County Memorial Hospital, a state of the art 800 bed tertiary medical care facility and a part of the University Health System of Eastern Carolina. The hospital provides acute, intermediate, rehabilitation and outpatient health services to more than 1.2 million people in 29 counties and includes a 52 bed psychiatric service that houses acute beds, combined MI-DD beds, and combined Med-Psych beds. Aside from operating this inpatient service, the Department of Psychiatric Medicine also runs busy and high volume consultation liaison and outpatient clinical services.

Our internship provides training in a variety of training sites throughout eastern North Carolina, including our outpatient psychiatry training clinic, the inpatient behavioral health unit, our affiliate teaching hospital and its outpatient clinics, and rural Federally Qualified Health Centers. The patient population is socially, economically, and racially diverse and is drawn from Pitt County and the surrounding 28 counties. Interns will have opportunities to develop specialized skills for the practice of primary care psychology and clinical health psychology in rural settings and will be exposed to innovative service delivery models for patients living in rural underserved areas.

Our clinical psychology faculty brings a broad range of expertise to our internship program. All faculty members are active clinicians who practice and teach from an evidence-based treatment model using a biopsychosocial approach. Interns will receive intensive training in clinical psychology with an emphasis in clinical health psychology through direct clinical practice and structured didactic training. Interns interested in research will be encouraged to explore opportunities throughout the myriad training sites both on and off campus. Interns will participate in true interdisciplinary training and will interact on a daily basis with our excellent Psychiatry faculty and residents as well as with health care providers in off-campus facilities.

Greenville is the hub of Eastern NC, and the home of East Carolina University, the 3rd largest public university in the state. Located near many recreational areas, including the Atlantic Ocean coastal resorts, Greenville is a university town, rich in cultural activities with charm and an easy pace of life. We are 5 hours from the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains and the Appalachian Trail, and we enjoy a moderate climate year round.

The internship year is July 1st through June 30th. The current intern stipend is $20,000 plus health insurance benefits. Interns are provided two weeks’ vacation per year, paid holidays, paid sick leave, and professional development days. Again, please note that this internship is new, thus it is not accredited by the American Psychological Association.

This internship site agrees to abide by the APPIC policy that no person at this training facility will solicit, accept, or use any ranking-related information from any intern applicant.
