GROWTH. The Brody School of Medicine enrolls nearly 300 medical students, trains 340 housestaff in 28 accredited post-graduate residency programs and a dozen fellowship programs. BSOM closely partners with Pitt County Memorial Hospital, an 840-bed tertiary referral center and Level 1 trauma center with 72 adult critical care beds. PCMH is part of a University Health Systems Consortium that includes 5 other regional community hospitals in eastern NC. The combined medical center is in a phase of explosive growth with several new construction projects near completion or under way:  New health sciences campus opened in 2006 with new allied health school, state's largest nursing school, and expanded library
New cardiovascular hospital at Pitt Count Memorial Hospital, with 120 additional ICU beds as well as research facilities, will open in spring '09. This will lead to expansion of medical critical care at PCMH to 24 beds along with the addition of 8 ventilator weaning beds. Full deployment of an in-patient unified electronic medical record system started in 2007 (HealthSpan), with subsequent inclusion of the ECU Physicians outpatient practice in 2009. Expansion of the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine to the Moye Medical Building (across the street from BSOM) with more office space, integrated outpatient exam rooms, PFT lab, and an office bronchoscopy lab, and planned addition of a sleep unit. The current complement of eight full-time faculty and four fellows is poised to grow over the next few years. New Cardiovascular Institute (375,000 sq ft) for outpatient CT surgery, cardiology, research facilities for BSOM is scheduled to open November 2008. New Family Practice outpatient facility (113,000 sq ft) broke ground in September 2008 and will be completed in 2010. New outpatient VA clinical facility (over 70,000 sq ft). New Dental School (112,000sq ft) (construction to begin in 2008 with an anticipated 2011 completion date).
Anticipated increase in the medical school class size by 50% to 120 students per year, with proposed expansion of BSOM physical facilities, satellite community training sites. RESEARCH. The Division has an active translational research program with several NIH grants, as well as corporate and device trials. We provide extensive laboratory facilities with access to cutting-edge techniques. In addition, our animal facilities support ongoing studies involving animal models of human disease (asthma, PAP, sarcoidosis). Targeted research areas include: Sarcoidosis and lung inflammation

Our Division actively collaborates with faculty from other disciplines, including the Leo Jenkins Cancer Center, microbiology/immunology, physiology, biochemistry/metabolism, and physics. The Division participates in regional and national networks for studying respiratory disease, including the bronchoscopy education project and a regional bronchoscopy database, the Rare Lung Disease Consortium, the Sarcoidosis Genetic Analysis group, and the N.C. COPD task force. The Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine at BSOM/ECU is an academic environment which emphasizes excellence in clinical care, as well as evolving research and training opportunities.
