About PWR
Project Working Recovery or PWR is a service research project funded for 3 years (2007-2010) by the Katherine B. Reynolds Charitable Trust. The mission of PWR is to assist individuals to choose, get, and keep a job, as a means to sustain their recovery from addiction.
The purpose of PWR is to provide a state-of-the-art employment intervention to augment standard substance abuse treatment for adults in rural, eastern NC. The PWR employment intervention integrates best-practices for adults with substance abuse and employment issues. PWR is supported by the East Carolina University Department of Rehabilitation Studies, which is housed within the College of Allied Health Sciences in the Health Sciences Building.
Services are delivered in the Vocational Evaluation/Career Assessment and Counseling Labs. Services include recruitment with partner agencies at their site, intake with plans for employment, assessment of employability and assistance with job finding. Working It Out, a computer based curriculum modified for persons in recovery, is used to help consumers choose, get and keep a job. Motivational interviewing is used to support these efforts. Program participants are eligible for incentives of vouchers for a dose of methadone, McDonald's gift cards, bus passes or other incentives. Click here for more information.
The Project is staffed with two co-directors, Drs. Paul Toriello and Steven Sligar, three coordinators, Tracie Campbell, Leigh Atherton and Stirling Schwiebert, and case managers, who are masters students.
