Summer Biomedical Research Program

Program Description
The SBRP provides a unique opportunity for undergraduates to engage in basic science research at the Brody School of Medicine (BSOM) and Vidant Medical Center. Faculty conducting research in the areas of Anatomy & Cell Biology, Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, Microbiology & Immunology, Pathology, Pharmacology & Toxicology, Physiology, Health Disparities and Clinical Research will prepare students to address scientific questions using cutting-edge experimental approaches.

Students selected for the SBRP will be paired with Brody faculty based upon mutual interest. Students will participate in various activities including a mock graduate/ medical school interview, a one-on-one career counseling session with basic science or clinical faculty, and students will present a poster of their research findings at the conclusion of the program. In addition, students will compose a professional/graduate school essay, develop a curriculum vitae, and take part in statistical analysis workshops.

Purpose
The purpose of this program is to 1). expose undergraduates (particularly those belonging to groups that are underrepresented in science) to research and career development activities in order to prepare them to compete for positions in graduate or medical programs and 2) recruit the top students to graduate and medical programs at BSOM.
