Throughout the residency, promotion is based upon the resident's satisfactory achievement of the cognitive, performance, and attitudinal competencies appropriate to his or her level of training. In addition the resident is expected to apply high moral and ethical standards and to demonstrate appropriate interpersonal skills with patients, patients' families, faculty, colleagues, students, and staff. All residents take the annual American Board of Surgery In-Training/Surgical Basic Science Examination, the results of which are considered an important index of each resident's cognitive development.
During the past five years, the majority of our finishing chief residents has pursued additional fellowship training, most frequently in Plastic Surgery, Vascular Surgery, or Trauma Surgery and Critical Care. The remainder has entered private practice in general surgery. We continue to be gratified by their ongoing successes.
