RESIDENCY CURRICULUM
 
Educational Goals and Surgical Curriculum for Residents’ Rotations at:
  • East Carolina University (ECU)
  • The Brody School of Medicine (BSOM)
  • Pitt County Memorial Hospital (PCMH)
  • University Health Systems of Eastern Carolina (UHSEC)

All surgical resident rotations are conducted in the University Health Systems of Eastern Carolina, PCMH Hospital and Operating Rooms, and ECU Clinics.

ACGME General Competencies
Broad Competency Areas are from the ACGME.  Learning activities and expected outcomes from the global surgical resident assessment form are provided in this document.

Curriculum Goals for Surgical Residents
The Residency Program Curriculum Goals are provided as a reference for the desired outcomes of surgical education.  This document summarizes our broad educational goals, ACGME Competencies, and Program Effectiveness Surveys.

Surgical Geriatric Curriculum Goals and Objectives
Surgical Geriatric Curriculum Goals and Objectives prepared as part of the ECU Department of Surgery Geriatric Education for Specialty Residents (GESR) funded program:  This includes performance expectations for the care of elderly patients in the areas of: Normal Aging, Pathophysiology, Perioperative Assessment, Operative Management, Perioperative Care, Rehabilitation, Financing and Patient Outcomes.

Trauma and Surgical Critical Care Rotation: Competency-Based Goals and Objectives
These trauma rotation goals and objectives are utilized for resident expectations at PGY-I, II, IV, and VI of the curriculum.  The format and content demonstrate program transition to display the six focus competencies in our residency curriculum.  Residents are linked to this section in preparation for each of their rotations on Trauma and Surgical Critical Care.
 

Junior and Senior Objectives for each PGY rotation.
This document includes topical performance outlines for all rotations, defined for “junior” or “senior” levels.  Our residency curriculum is based upon specific objectives for resident study and preparation that are provided by The Association of Program Directors in Surgery-East Carolina University, Department of Surgery Surgical Resident Curriculum, 4th edition, Editors: SS Cox, WE Pofahl, and WJ Pories. Many ECU surgeons prepared materials for and edited this curriculum model for use in our residency program.  Each applicable curriculum unit is referenced by PGY level.
