The medical exam is non-invasive and provided to assess the child's health. The exam may also require the completion of laboratory work to ensure the child is healthy. At TEDI BEAR, most exams are external and there are no painful procedures. Examinations are completed by a pediatrician or physician extender.
A child life specialist provides children with informational sessions and accompanies them during the exam. This is to ensure the child understands the process and to help lessen their anxiety. Because TEDI BEAR is a child centered facility, older children are empowered to make the decision to have parent or adult support and presence during the medical exam.
