Welcome to the TEDI BEAR Children's Advocacy Center web site. Our name stands for Tender Evaluation, Diagnosis and Intervention for a BEtter Abuse Response. The center is a partnership between the Department of Pediatrics at the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University and the James and Connie Maynard Children's Hospital at Vidant Medical Center located in Greenville, NC.
We are an accredited member of the National Children's Alliance and a member of the Children's Advocacy Centers of North Carolina. We are also one of nearly 800 children's advocacy centers across the country serving who are, or may have been, victims of child abuse or neglect.
TEDI BEAR Children's Advocacy Center serves alleged victims up to the age of eighteen. The center provides a child-friendly environment to help heal the trauma that typically accompanies abuse or neglect. TEDI BEAR also helps the parents or other caregivers of abused children, provided that the caregivers have not committed or contributed to the child's abuse. Alleged offenders are not permitted on the premises. All services are provided with the focus on the child.
TEDI BEAR was founded in 1992, and is a subspecialty clinic within the Department of Pediatrics, Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University. ECU is the third largest public university in the State of North Carolina. The Brody School of Medicine, together with Vidant Medical Center, supports TEDI BEAR CAC, with assistance from major grant funding by the North Carolina Governor's Crime Commission, the Vidant Health Foundation, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, Children's Miracle Network Hospitals, and the National Children's Alliance.
