Event Information
Title: History Alive! at the Country Doctor Museum
Date: Saturday 10/27/2012
Time: 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM
Where: Country Doctor Museum, 6642 Peele Road, Bailey
Summary: A daylong celebration at the oldest museum in the United States dedicated to the history of rural health care. Exhibits showcase more than 5,000 medical artifacts and volumes of historic texts relevant to the practice of medicine between the late 18th century and the first half of the 20th century. In addition to rural doctors, nursing, pharmaceuticals, and home remedies are included.
Details:
Free activities will include horse drawn carriage rides 11 a.m.-2 p.m.; pony and cart rides for children 11 a.m.-3 p.m.; and museum tours. Visitors can meet the famous historical figure "Ben Franklin," who will perform a one-man show at the top of the hour throughout the day. Traditional music will be provided by Chambergrass, which plays classical and traditional Bluegrass vocals and instrumentals. Food vendors will be selling barbecue, hot dogs, funnel cakes, fried oreos and more.
Exhibits by the Aurora Fossil Museum, Sylvan Heights Bird Park, Rocky Mount Children's Museum and Science Center, Ava Gardner Museum and Aycock Birthplace will be featured. 
Through an agreement with the Medical & Health Sciences Foundation at ECU, the museum is managed as part of the History Collections of Laupus Library.
