Empty Bowls is an international grassroots effort to raise money to combat hunger while reminding participants of all the empty bowls in the world. Guests purchase $15 tickets for a meal of soup and bread, along with a handmade bowl.

The North Carolina Literary Review and the City Art Gallery will co-host an opening reception for the Third Annual James Applewhite Poetry Invitational Feb. 8 at the gallery.

The 2013 Greenville Chinese New Year Celebration will be held Sunday, Feb. 10, with a free stage show at 3 p.m. in Wright Auditorium. A Chinese New Year buffet dinner, which is a ticketed event, will be held beginning at 5:30 p.m. at West End Dining Hall.

The ECU School of Music will present Jazz at The Hilton in a free, open event.

The ECU Symphony Orchestra will present a free concert Feb. 16 featuring Carlos Gomes, Overture from the Opera "Il Guarany;" Heitor Villa-Lobos, "Bachianas Brasileiras No. 2;" Samuel Barber, "Violin Concerto" with guest soloist Hye-Jin Kim, violin.

Seven ECU graduate students in creative writing will read from their original works on Feb. 18. The reading, which is free and open to the public, will include fiction, poetry and creative nonfiction.

James Morgan, chairman, president, and chief executive officer of Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, will speak Feb. 19 as part of the Cunanan Leadership Speaker Series hosted by the College of Business. The public is invited to attend this free event. Morgan's speech is titled "Pursuing a Passion."

The College of Technology and Computer Science at ECU will host an Employer & Student Networking Day from noon to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 20.

Coastal Winds, the ECU Faculty Woodwind Quintet, will perform music of Ligeti, Muczynski Reicha and Taffanel in a free concert, featuring Christine Gustafson, flute; Bo Newsome, oboe; Douglas Monroe, clarinet; Chris Ulffers, bassoon; Mary Burroughs, horn.

The ECU School of Music Chamber Singers will present a free concert at St. Paul's Episcopal Church on Feb. 22.

ECU hosts the popular Foreign Policy Association’s Great Decisions Program through March 9. The program, now in its ninth year at ECU and co-sponsored by the World Affairs Council of Eastern North Carolina, will run for consecutive Saturdays through March 9. Sessions will be held from 10 a.m. to noon in the Rivers West Building auditorium on the ECU campus.

The School of Music will present a free Four Seasons Next Generation concert featuring violinist Hagai Shaham; former ECU Student Andrew Minguez, viola; J. Christopher Buddo, double bass; Ara Gregorian, violin; Emanuel Gruber, cello; Hye-Jin Kim, violin; Melissa Reardon, viola; and Keiko Sekino, piano in concert in A.J. Fletcher Recital Hall.

The Ethnic Studies Film Series will screen and discuss "Night Catches Us," directed by Tonya Hamilton. The film will be introduced by Gera Miles. Free and open to ECU faculty, staff and students.

A production of the Loessin Playhouse, "The Drowsy Chaperone" takes the stage Feb. 28-March 5 in the McGinnis Theatre.

The documentary "Beyond the Bricks" will be screened and discussed during this free Courage to Change event. The forum will feature a panel discussion on efforts to improve black male achievement in eastern N.C.

ECU's Office of Annual Giving will host a philanthropy awareness event at Wright Plaza to educate students on the importance of giving back and supporting their university. ECU will join nearly 70 educational institutions worldwide to participate in the first Student Engagement and Philanthropy Day.
