Professional Development Opportunity

The Department of Literacy Studies, English Education and History Education in the College of Education at ECU hosts the Margaret Blount Harvey Literacy Institute each fall and spring with the generous support of Ms. Harvey's family members Mrs. Leigh Harvey McNairy and Mrs. Sunny Harvey Burrows. The Institute provides an excellent professional development opportunity for top literacy leaders from local education agencies and encourages these leaders to work together to focus on best instructional practices and advocacy for literacy. Past keynote speakers have included the following:

  • Lester Laminack
  • Peter Johnston
  • Kelly Gallagher

As part of the Margaret Blount Harvey Literacy Institute, Literacy Leaders from across the Latham Clinical Schools Network come together to discuss literacy topics and best instructional practices including early literacy assessment and instruction,  content and disciplinary literacy, strategies for addressing the literacy needs of struggling readers particularly at the middle and secondary school levels, and innovative strategies for fostering student engagement.
