  • Hope Receives NCCTM Award in Quest to Earn Teaching Degree
At first glance Susan Marie Hope may seem like your traditional undergraduate student at East Carolina, but that’s not the case entirely.

A 2001 graduate of Burns High School in Lawndale, Hope decided to become a mathematics teacher after being hired as a teaching assistant for “at-risk” students through Communities in Schools.

“I decided to become a mathematics educator because I am in love with mathematics, and I want to inspire others to fall in love with mathematics,” says Hope, a senior in the College of Education.

“I love to watch the ‘light bulb’ moment when someone finally grasps a mathematical concept,” she adds.

Hope’s passion for math and academic perseverance paid off recently when the North Carolina Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCCTM) announced that she had been selected this year’s outstanding math education student from the Eastern region. Hope, who will graduate in spring 2005, is one of only three students to win this statewide honor. She will receive a plaque along with a $100 cash award.

The scholarship is awarded each year to a future mathematics educator in the Eastern, Western, and Central regions of the state.

Although Hope has little free time outside her classes, she admits that the honor is well worth the sacrifice. She works in ECU’s mathematics lab as a teaching assistant and tutor around her 21-hour course schedule. She is also currently exploring topics in Operations Research and learning to program in C++.

“I am so thrilled! I never imagined that I would be chosen to receive this honor,” says Hope.

Hope has no notable hobbies, but speaks highly of her two pet hermit crabs, Bertha and Galileo, and a bonsai tree named Charlie.
