The goal of the East Carolina University Teacher Quality Partnership (TQP) grant project is to strengthen the knowledge and experience base of prospective teachers and to improve the achievement scores of their students in their first year of teaching. This will be accomplished by focusing on improving teaching and learning in four content areas: language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies.

The first years involved identifying research-based instructional strategies that would become a thread of knowledge from declarative and procedural, culminating with conditional evidence of learning.  These instructional strategies have been infused in coursework, clinical practice, induction, and school reform. Additionally, the coursework will apply to all types of learners, including students with disabilities, English language learners, and academically gifted. A feature of this project is its potential to improve the quality of teachers for one of North Carolina's high-poverty regions. East Carolina University is the largest producer of teachers in North Carolina and a substantial supplier of teachers to its eastern region, a high-poverty area and the area to be served by this grant.

Partners with the ECU College of Education include the ECU Harriott College of Arts and Sciences,Pitt County Schools and Greene County Schools. This project is funded by the U.S. Department of Education, award# U405A090067, under the title: Teacher Quality and Student Achievement: A Comprehensive Data-Driven School-University Approach to P-16 Reform.
